Fish Gripper

Fish Gripper

Tubers and tooners who anticipate hooking larger fish should carry lip grippers. There are several models made by different manufacturers. Most allow one-handed operation to open and close a pair of “tongs” at the end that firmly grab and hold the lower jaw of a large active fish while you are removing the hook or taking a picture.

Lip grippers are great for protecting both the fish and the angler. If you plan to release a fish lip grippers aid in removing the hook without touching the fish. Contact with a fish’s skin can be harmful to them. It removes the protective slime coating and leaves the skin open to attack from disease and fungus. And, if the fish has teeth the lip gripper holds it safely away from your tender flesh or vulnerable air chambers.

Lip grippers come in several lengths, and some models include scales and/or measuring tapes. Obviously these extra enhancements increase the price but they make it easier to quickly weigh and measure your catch before release, even if you are just going to release it into a fish basket. For quick access it is best to keep them in a tool rack. Just be sure to keep them well secured. They are not cheap.
